Dishwasher not draining: causes and when to request repair

Illustration: Dishwasher not draining: causes and when to request repair

Water covering the dishwasher floor after a completed cycle may indicate a drainage problem. Learn the difference between a small residual amount and standing water, and when to stop using the appliance.

Note the amount of water and whether the programme actually finished. Water during an interrupted cycle differs from water left after completion.

Stop using a leaking dishwasher

If water escapes, stop using the appliance and close the water supply if safely accessible. Do not touch the plug or connections in a wet area or run another cycle to film the leak.

Residual water or a drainage problem?

A small amount of water may remain in the filter area, depending on the model. Water covering the tub floor after a completed cycle needs attention. Check the manual for what is normal.

Check how the programme ended

Did the cycle finish or stop with an error? Record the code before clearing it, and mention if the issue began after a change to drain connections.

When a technician is needed

Request an inspection if standing water recurs, the dishwasher leaks or an unusual noise appears. Do not put tools or fingers into the pump; sharp debris may be present.

The drain path and filter

Food debris or an obstruction in the drain path can restrict water flow. The pump or controls may also be involved; sound alone does not establish the cause.

If the user-accessible filter needs cleaning, follow the model manual and its safety instructions. Do not remove the pump cover or pull a built-in dishwasher out to reach the hose.

Foam and detergent

Unsuitable detergent or excess foam can cause a problem that looks like a leak. Use dishwasher detergent in the amount specified by the manual, never hand dishwashing liquid.

For help, request a dishwasher inspection. Read the repair FAQs for service information.

Manufacturer reference

The Bosch dishwasher drainage guide explains how the filter and pump relate to water flow. Use your model manual. Leave pump dismantling and inspection of its internal parts to a qualified technician.

The link does not imply that Ellen is an authorised Bosch agent or that the instructions suit every dishwasher. When requesting service, mention water remaining after the cycle and any displayed code, with the model if known. Do not run it again to demonstrate the fault.
