Fridge not cooling: possible causes and safe observations

Illustration: Fridge not cooling: possible causes and safe observations

Poor refrigerator cooling may involve settings, door closure or a fault that needs inspection. Protect food first, then note whether the fridge, freezer or both are affected.

An interior light or operating sound does not establish that cooling is adequate. Observe how both compartments perform without attempting internal repairs.

Protect food first

If the refrigerator is no longer keeping food cold, move perishable items to suitable alternative refrigeration and limit door opening. Operation resuming alone does not establish food safety.

Settings, door closure and airflow

Check the temperature setting against your manual. Look for packaging preventing the door from closing or blocking a visible air vent. Do not dismantle the door or covers.

Is the freezer still cold?

A cold freezer with a warm fridge can involve airflow or frost build-up. Poor cooling in both compartments gives the technician a different starting point.

When to request an inspection

Request an inspection if poor cooling continues, the appliance stops, or a leak or new loud noise accompanies the fault. Repeatedly unplugging and reconnecting it does not repair the cause.

Frost and continuous operation

Ice near vents may affect air distribution. Do not chip it with a knife or sharp tool, or use a heat source to remove it.

Longer operation can follow frequent door opening or changing surroundings, but it can also accompany a fault. Note whether continuous running or noise coincides with poor cooling.

Does the fridge need refrigerant?

Poor cooling alone cannot establish that. The appliance needs inspection before work on the refrigerant circuit or compressor replacement is decided. Do not open that circuit yourself.

You can request a refrigerator inspection and read the cost and warranty FAQs before approving a repair.

Check the model manual

The LG refrigerator cooling guide covers settings, ventilation and use of its appliances. Refer to your own model manual to check what applies.

This manufacturer reference does not imply that Ellen is an authorised agent. When contacting us, mention the affected compartment, how long cooling has been poor and any frost or unusual noise. You do not need to identify a failed part.
